President Trump said he looks forward to a day when American troops can come home from the Middle East. During a joint press briefing with the Prime Minister of Iraq Thursday, the president said America’s military and its role in Iraq were expected to be a key talking point in their meeting.
There are currently around 5,000 troops stationed in Iraq and the president said the U.S. is prepared to aid the nation if Iran were to try to interfere in Iraq. However, President Trump also noted that he would like to get down to the lowest number of troops overseas as quickly as possible.

Last month, a top U.S. general said he believes Americans would have a small, but enduring presence in the Middle East. According to reports, discussions of a withdrawal may not be featured in the meeting, but instead the “posturing of the troops.”
