Italy’s prime minister is set to face a hearing with prosecutors over the country’s pandemic response. Giuseppe Conte spoke with reporters Wednesday and said he’s planning to explain the facts behind the country’s handling of the coronavirus outbreak.
The investigation came at the request of family members who lost someone to COVID-19 and want to know if there is any criminal responsibility for how the virus was managed. A lawyer for the group said approximately 40 requests for a probe were made.
Prime Minister Conte said he isn’t concerned about the hearing. He made the following remarks on the matter:
“I am not worried at all. It is not out of arrogance, it is not out of complacency. I won’t comment on the words the prosecutor has already said on TV. We will meet on Friday and I will refer all the facts that I know about in absolute calmness.”
Italy confirms its support to global cooperation against COVID-19. Today I announced additional contributions from Italy to @gavi, to continue immunization programs for 300 million children and to accelerate an equitable distribution of a #COVIDー19 vaccine #GVS2020

Critics of the government blame the response from leaders for the mass deaths that happened in previous months. The hearing is set to take place Friday.
