One unnamed deputy was shot in the head during the exchange and is hospitalized in serious condition.
Police said while searching for the suspect they found the body of a homeless man who had also been shot and they assume the discovery is connected to the ambush. Authorities believe the attack was premeditated.
“That’s kind of been the general theme floating around the nation right now, this rise up anti-law enforcement coalition it seems,” stated Sheriff Ian Parkinson, San Luis Obispo County.
After hours of searching downtown, police reported that the suspect may no longer be in the area. Lira is believed to be armed and dangerous.
Several agencies are working with local law enforcement on the two ongoing investigations.
