A news helicopter providing coverage for NBC Los Angeles (NBC4) and Telemundo 52 crashed in the San Fernando Valley area of L.A., leaving three dead and two hospitalized, according to authorities.
The crash occurred just before 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday while the helicopter was covering a deadly bus collision, NBCLA reported.
The aircraft was NewsChopper4 and was operated by Angel City Air, the station confirmed. Per NBC4, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) said the helicopter crashed between two buildings, resulting in a fire that spread to nearby vehicles and storage containers.
Two of the deceased were Angel City Air employees — journalist Eliana Moreno, whom NBCLA described as a familiar voice for the station and Telemundo 52, and pilot George Marciniw. Authorities said the third person killed was on the ground.
Fire Battalion Chief Rico Gross said that two other people were taken to the hospital, NBC4 said.
“We are deeply saddened to share that a helicopter providing aerial news coverage for NBC4 and Telemundo 52 was involved in a fatal accident in Los Angeles on Tuesday evening,” NBC4 and Telemundo 52 Los Angeles said in a statement. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of those who lost their lives.”
The cause of the crash has not been revealed. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said it was investigating the Tuesday crash of a Eurocopter AS 350 B2 helicopter in Chatsworth.
Additionally, at least two people were killed in the bus accident the station was reporting on, with others reportedly injured, according to the fire department.
