At sunrise, military personnel unfurled a massive 20-by-40-foot American flag down the side of the Pentagon to mark a solemn day of remembrance for the victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The unfurling takes place on the building’s west wall — near the exact impact site of American Airlines Flight 77 — and echoes the act of defiance and unity by first responders who hung a flag over the damaged structure the morning after the attacks.
The flag display is part of an annual series of observances honoring the 184 people killed at the Department of War headquarters, including 125 military and civilian personnel working inside the building and 59 passengers and crew aboard the aircraft.
Official ceremonies include a moment of silence at 9:37 a.m. EDT — the exact time of the strike — followed by a reading of the victims’ names and a wreath-laying ceremony at the National September 11 Pentagon Memorial. President Donald Trump will be in attendance.
