The Kremlin signaled that trilateral peace talks between Russia, Ukraine and the United States were on the table following U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner’s visit to Moscow and Kyiv.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that the three-way format was possible but gave no timeline for the potential talks.

“As for the resumption of the trilateral format, you heard the statement from Kyiv yesterday. Mr. Kushner made such statements. We, too, do not rule out the resumption of the trilateral format, but it is still too early to speak of the venue and exact dates,” he stated.

Kushner and Witkoff arrived in Russia on Saturday before heading to Ukraine the next day. To support the peace talks, both Ukraine and Russia reportedly agreed to halt strikes on each other’s capitals.

The U.S. representatives and Russian President Vladimir Putin engaged in a three-hour-long, closed-door discussion, a Kremlin aide reportedly said. Specific proposals were not announced from the meeting, though both sides seemed to frame the talks optimistically.

Peskov noted that a phone call between President Donald Trump and Putin was possible following the envoys’ visit.

“Undoubtedly, any attempts that are more or less effective represent one small step towards peace. We greatly appreciate the peacemaking efforts of the American negotiators,” Peskov said on Monday.

He further expressed Putin’s gratitude for the peace-making efforts of President Donald Trump, who has long advocated for an end to the Russia-Ukraine war.

“President Putin himself has said that he holds President Trump’s efforts in high regard, and that he is grateful to President Trump for his commitment to this path towards peace,” Peskov stated, according to Reuters.

Following their meeting with Putin, Witkoff and Kusnher traveled to Kyiv on Sunday, where they met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Witkoff described initial talks as “substantive,” and Kushner explained that the goal was to accomplish not only short term peace through ending the war, but also to ensure lasting stability.

In a Monday social media post, Zelensky said that they held three rounds of negotiations and were also joined by representatives from France, the United Kingdom and Germany. He also said he met separately with Kushner and Witkoff to discuss the outcomes of the day.

“The most important thing is to continue working together actively to keep diplomacy going,” the Ukrainian president asserted.

Earlier on Monday, Zelensky also announced that several Russian targets were struck in Ukrainian attacks as the four-and-a-half-year war continues on.
