Five people were shot and wounded in a shooting involving multiple suspects at Virginia State University, officials said.
Early on Saturday, at around 1:28 a.m., a shooting took place in the area of the Quad Annexes near Boisseau Street and 3rd Avenue, according to the university.
No arrests were announced, despite the university reporting “multiple suspects.”
The five individuals who were shot were taken to hospitals in the area. One was initially listed as having life-threatening injuries and was later upgraded to critical condition, according to county police. The others had non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The campus went on lockdown in the morning, though it was lifted as of about 8:20 a.m.
“Officers responded to the 3300 block of Boisseau Street at approximately 1:28 a.m. and discove3red five individuals suffering from gunshot wounds outside VSU residence halls,” the university wrote in a statement online.
The institution added that Chesterfield County Police was leading the investigation, aided by campus police, the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
County police said more information about the incident would be available later in the day.
Virginia State University is a public historically Black university about 24 miles from the state capital of Richmond. It has about 5,700 students, mostly undergraduates, and was the first fully state-supported four-year college for Black Americans.
The campus opened to students this month in anticipation of the start of the academic year, with classes beginning on Monday.
