Incumbent Representative Ilhan Omar won the Democrat primary election for the U.S. House representing Minnesota’s 5th District as she seeks a fifth term.
With 99% of votes counted on Tuesday, Omar (D-Minn.) won 122,640 votes, or about 80% of the vote, according to the Associated Press.
The congresswoman was challenged by former federal prosecutor Julie Trang Le, Hennepin County probation officer Latonya Reeves, U.S. Army veteran Nate Schluter and nurse Abena A. McKenzie, though each of them secured less than 10% of the vote.
After her election was called, Omar simply wrote on X, “Thank you, CD5.”
Omar strongly opposes the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement and expansion of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol funding. She also supports moving towards universal, single-payer healthcare, arguing that “Medicare for All” is ultimately necessary.
Retired Minnesota State Patrol officer John Nagel is the Republican nominee who will face Omar in the general election.
According to the AP, Nagel won 7,777 votes, or about 52% of the vote. Journalist Dalia Al-Aqidi came in second with about 26% of the vote, while former War Department and U.S. Postal Service employee Angie Windhauser gained 15.5% and Abbey Zieska had about 6%.
“Thanks to all of you. I’m humbled and grateful for your support. Now the hard work starts. Taking Minnesota back. You’ve chosen a Minnesotan for Minnesota. Despite what some say. Prayers do matter. And this is Minnesota. The State of Hockey. We do believe in Miracles,” he wrote on X Tuesday night, posting a screen capture of the Republican election results.
Nagel supports law enforcement, making public safety a top priority after his 30-year career with the Minnesota State Patrol. As for his economic policy, he plans to reverse “Bidenomics,” reducing government spending and cutting costs for working families.
Finally, the Republican candidate has emphasized holding the government accountable in response to Minnesota’s large-scale public-benefits fraud scandals, which he said were perpetuated by government failures and inadequate enforcement.
