President Donald Trump and new United Kingdom Prime Minister Andy Burnham appear to have started their working relationship on good footing.
In a Monday Truth Social post, Trump revealed the two had a “very good conversation,” stating they would be meeting in the near future to discuss “topics of mutual interest.”
“The Prime Minister has got a big job ahead of him, but he will be able to do it and, of course, the U.S.A. will be there to help!” Trump said. “The call was interesting, and went very well. I wished Prime Minister Burnham, GOOD LUCK AND GODSPEED!”
Burnham met with King Charles III on Monday, officially becoming the prime minster, the seventh person to hold the office in just over a decade.
During remarks on Monday, Burnham, who has described himself as a socialist, stated that he would roll out a 10-year plan for the country by the end of the year. He voiced his hope that this would be a pivotal moment for the UK.
There has been speculation about Burnham’s approach to oil and gas policy. The deputy leader of the Labour Party, Lucy Powell, told the BBC that Burnham would take “a more pragmatic approach” with the industry, though he is expected to maintain the ban on new oil and gas exploration licenses while honoring existing ones.
However, Trump voiced optimism on the subject of North Sea oil, asserting in a Sunday Truth Social post that Burnham had said he would “be opening up, all the way.”
“It is one of the Greatest Sources of quality Oil on Earth, has hundreds of years of Capacity left, with much not even found yet, and will make the United Kingdom, from a Poverty Stricken Disaster, to one of the Richest Countries anywhere in the World!” Trump said.
The U.S. commander-in-chief said the topic was discussed on Monday, along with the military alliance and the demining of the Strait of Hormuz.
Previous Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation in June, after less than two years in office. Starmer and Trump disagreed on certain fronts, especially regarding the UK’s level of involvement in the Iranian conflict and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz.
