Controversial influencer Andrew Tate and his brother, Tristan Tate, have been arrested in the United States after a request from British authorities, who announced new sex abuse-related charges against them.
The brothers were arrested on Saturday in Miami by U.S. Marshals, per a request from the United Kingdom, which accused them of abusing women in England, north of London, between 2010 and 2017.
On Sunday, the UK Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) brought Andrew, 39, seven new counts of rape, three counts of arranging trafficking for sexual exploitation, three counts of assault causing bodily harm and 19 charges of offenses relating to indecent images of a child and “extreme pornography.”
It also brought an additional count of sexual assault, two counts of rape and three counts of arranging trafficking for sexual exploitation against Tristan, 38.
A total of 38 new charges were added to the Tate brothers’ list of accusations, which originally held 21 criminal charges. The allegations were reported by seven victims, according to the UK CPS.
UK prosecutors plan to extradite the brothers from the U.S. to face proceedings on both the initial and new charges.
“We have decided to prosecute Andrew and Tristan Tate for further offences including rape, arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation and offences relating to indecent images of a child. These charging decisions followed receipt of a further file of evidence from Bedfordshire Police and bring the total number of alleged victims in this case to seven,” UK CPS Head of the Special Crime Division Malcolm McHaffie stated in a news release.
“The Crown Prosecution Service reminds everyone that criminal proceedings are active, and that these defendants have the right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings,” McHaffie added.
The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) confirmed the arrest by U.S. Marshals “pursuant to extradition proceedings,” adding the arrests “were made in accordance with the treaties and law enforcement agreements governing Justice Department extraditions.”
Andrew and Tristan appeared in Miami federal court on Monday, where they rejected the extradition request.
“They’ve never done nothing wrong. They shouldn’t be extradited for crimes they didn’t commit,” the Tate brothers’ attorney, Joe McBride, said. “It’s garbage. It’s a stitch up job.”
In a statement on X on Sunday, McBride announced that the brothers were sitting “in a 5×12 cell as political prisoners on American soil, in SOLITARY CONFINEMENT.”
“Make no mistake about it: they are being punished for daring to exercise their First Amendment Rights,” he asserted, arguing that the brothers were arrested for sharing their political opinions online.
Andrew is a self-proclaimed “misogynist” with a large following in a corner of the internet that has been described as the “manosphere.” He became viral on social media for his portrayals of masculinity and wealth.
“I will state right now that I am absolutely sexist and I’m absolutely a misogynist … So, I’ll say what I want because I’m aa realist. And when you’re a realist, you’re sexist,” Andrew said in a 2021 episode of the “Anything Goes with James English” podcast.
