United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that a U.S. service member was killed during a “controlled detonation” of a downed Iranian drone in northern Iraq.
The command stated that a second service member was also wounded during the incident on Saturday, though that individual is receiving “medical treatment for a minor injury.”
“…a U.S. service member in northern Iraq was killed in action July 18 during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone,” the command stated on Sunday.

As is customary, CENTCOM said it was withholding additional information to respect the families of the fallen service members during the notification process.
In the same Sunday statement, the command also provided an update on two fallen and one missing U.S. services members in Jordan due to an Iranian attack on Friday. CENTCOM said that U.S. military personnel found unidentified remains at the same location, noting that the “examination process to verify the remains is ongoing.”
Per media reports, more than a dozen U.S. military personnel have died since the start of the conflict with Iran, as well as hundreds more injured.
Across the Middle East, more than 50,000 U.S. troops are deployed, according to CENTCOM.
