United States Senator John Fetterman revealed he would leave the Democrat Party if it “officially” became “the anti-Israel party,” according to an interview with NBC News.

For the first time, Senator John Fetterman (D-Pa.)—known for his willingness to ignore party lines on certain legislation—revealed the exact “red line” that would prompt him to exit the Democrat Party already fractured by internal divisions.

“I’ve been frustrated with the way the Democratic party continues to turn its back on Israel. I mean that’s old news honestly,” he told NBC News on Capitol Hill on Thursday.

When asked if the ongoing lack of support would make him consider switching parties, Fetterman replied that if Democrats put “no aid for Israel” in the party’s “official platform” it would prompt him to leave.

“[If the Democrats] officially become the ‘anti-Israel party’ the yeah, that’s a red line for me,” he emphasized.

“I’m always proud to stand with Israel,” the senator declared.

Ahead of Fetterman’s stark warning, more than 100 House Democrats backed a proposal by Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) on Wednesday to halt U.S. aid to Israel, a measure that faced strong opposition from most GOP senators. This legislative alignment instantly amplified tensions within the the Democrat party, leading to Fetterman’s critiques on Thursday.

Despite his ongoing clashes with the Democrat party, the Pennsylvania senator did not share which affiliation he would switch to, or if he would become an independent.

According to a Quinnipiac poll released Wednesday, Fetterman’s approval rating among Pennsylvania Democrats has dropped to just 19%, presenting a significant hurdle if he chose to run for re-election in 2028.

Conversely, the poll highlighted his growing cross-party appeal, showing a 77% approval rating among Republicans, though it remains uncertain if that support would translate into actual votes at the ballot box, NBC News noted.
