U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent shared the design for a new dollar coin featuring President Donald Trump’s portrait for the 250th anniversary of American independence.
In an X post on Wednesday, Bessent said the United States Mint would circulate the new form of currency.
“As America commemorates 250 years of independence, the @usmint will begin striking this new $1 gold coin to honor the enduring legacy of liberty and a lasting symbol of patriotism,” he wrote. “Featuring President Trump, it celebrates the strength of American values, and the promise of a nation dedicated to preserving freedom for all.”
The coin is already in production, according to a U.S. Department of the Treasury (USDT) spokesperson who spoke to CBS News, and will be available to the public in the fall. The spokesperson clarified that it will have a “gold-like finish,” but its composition will include non-precious metals.
The front of the coin shows Trump’s face, calling back to the presidential portrait he took for his second term in office. The inscriptions “LIBERTY” and “1776 ~ 2026” frame his face. It also bears the inscription, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” which is required on all U.S. currency by Public Law 140.
On the reverse, or “tails,” side is the seal of the president of the United States: A bald eagle with a shield, holding an olive branch in one claw to represent peace, holding arrows in his other to denote war, and a scroll in his beak that reads “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” Latin for “out of many, one.” It also reads, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR.”
U.S. law generally prohibits a living person from appearing on coinage or paper dollars. However, the Trump administration argues that the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 allows the current president’s likeness to be immortalized on a commemorative coin for the nation’s Semiquincentennial.
Beginning January 1, 2026, the Treasury Department may issue “1 dollar coins with designs emblematic of the U.S. Semiquincentennial,” the law states.
President Calvin Coolidge, the 30th U.S. president, featured his profile on a half-dollar coin commemorating America’s 150th anniversary, or Sesquicentennial, in 1926. The obverse, or “heads” side, featured Coolidge alongside President George Washington. This was the first time in history that a living president was featured on a U.S. coin.
The USDT teased the limited-edition coin in October, sharing a first draft sketch of an obverse with Trump’s profile and a reverse with Trump holding up his fist, evocative of his famous “fight, fight, fight” chant after he was shot in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The Treasury Department also revealed a special America 250 quarter design featuring President Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence.
The U.S. Mint is authorized by Congress to produce coins, while the Treasury Secretary approves currency designs and issuance.
