President Donald Trump has announced that Iran is still looking to continue a diplomatic end to months of conflict with the U.S. after Trump declared that the ceasefire is “over” and the two sides traded strikes.
Trump wrote on Truth Social on Friday, “The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue ‘talks.’ We have agreed to do so, but the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire is OVER!”

Speaking at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Summit in Turkey on Wednesday, Trump blasted Iran’s Islamic leaders, calling them “cuckoo.”
“I don’t want to deal with them anymore, they’re scum. … They’re led by sick people and they’re vicious, violent people,” he said. “And if they had a nuclear weapon, they’d use it.”
He said that despite his opinion that further negotiations would not be fruitful, Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law and former staffer, Jared Kushner, wanted to continue talks.
These comments came a day after Iran attacked three merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. retaliated and has resumed strikes on Iranian infrastructure and military targets in the ensuing days.
Meanwhile, Iran finally held a funeral for its deceased supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, after an Israeli attack killed him and several members of his family and government on February 28th, the first day of Israel’s joint strikes with the U.S.
The days-long funeral began before the Independence Day weekend, with attendees reportedly shouting chants of “Death to America.”
Reports of Iranian plots to assassinate President Trump also surfaced this week.
“They want to take out the U.S. leader, me,” Trump told reporters on Wednesday. “I’m on every list. I saw this morning, I’m on every single one of their lists. And so far, I guess I’ve been a little bit lucky, but that maybe doesn’t last very long.”
