Speaking with reporters on Wednesday night, President Donald Trump said he has “no idea” how 84-year-old Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell is doing, following the lawmaker’s weeks-long, secretive hospitalization.

Aboard Air Force One on Wednesday, Trump was asked if he had heard from McConnell (R-Ky.) since he was hospitalized on June 14^th, prompting the president to reply, “No.”

“I have no idea how he’s doing,” Trump said bluntly when questioned about the former Senate majority leader.

Reporter: Have you spoken to Senator Mitch McConnell since his hospitalization?

Trump: No, I haven’t.

McConnell has not been seen or heard from publicly — including in photos or videos — since he was admitted to a hospital for unclear reasons, renewing concerns over his well-being and ability to serve the remainder of his final term in office.

His seventh term ends in early January, and McConnell has already announced that he would not be seeking re-election after four decades of public service.

The senator was also hospitalized back in February for about a week — due to “flu-like symptoms.”

McConnell has suffered several highly scrutinized health incidents in recent years. In August 2023, he appeared to freeze while speaking to reporters in Kentucky. Last February, he also fell twice while in the Senate Chamber.

Meanwhile, several public figures have since reported speaking at length with McConnell since his hospitalization, seemingly rebutting online claims that he was in a severe condition. CNN commentator Scott Jennings, Senate Whip John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) and Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) have all claimed that they have spoken with the senator.

Nonetheless, Governor Andy Beshear (D-Ky.) sent a letter to McConnell’s Senate office this week urging the lawmaker to provide a full report on his current status in order to quell concerns among his Kentucky constituents.

“Allowing speculation to continue in the media is not fair to the Senator or to Kentuckians, and my hope is that this provides him the opportunity to share the information in a transparent manner, direct from the source,” Beshear stated on Wednesday. “I wish him a safe and speedy recovery.”

Kentucky state law requires a special election to replace McConnell if he vacates his seat before August 3^rd.
