An illegal immigrant from Mexico was shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Houston, Texas, after allegedly trying to run over agents with his vehicle.

“On July 7, 2026, at approximately 6:50 AM CT, ICE law enforcement attempted to conduct a vehicle stop as part of a targeted enforcement operation to arrest an illegal alien,” ICE stated on Tuesday.

“The driver of the vehicle, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo—an illegal alien from Mexico—attempted to evade arrest,” the spokesperson continued.

ICE added that the driver had “rammed” his car into an ICE vehicle and did not respond to verbal commands. He then “weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer, resulting in our officer firing his weapon in self-defense.”

Araujo was taken to a hospital with first responders attempting CPR. He later passed away due to his wounds, having been struck in the abdomen, according to the Houston Fire Department.

ICE said that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Houston is leading a probe into the possible assault of an officer. The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of the Inspector General (DHS-OIG) is also investigating the situation.

“This is a developing situation, and we will update the public when more information is available,” ICE said in a statement.

Some lawmakers have released statements in response to the altercation.

“ICE has released an initial account, but the facts must be independently and thoroughly investigated, including the circumstances that led to the use of deadly force,” wrote U.S. Representative Sylvia Garcia (D-Texas).

“All available footage, communications, and other evidence should be preserved and reviewed as part of a full and impartial investigation,” she went on. “The victim’s family, my constituents, and the entire community deserve a complete and transparent accounting of what happened.”

State Representative Christina Morales (D-Texas) said, “Today, a man was shot and another was nearly run over by a vehicle. We’ve seen incidents like this around the country, and now they have come to Houston. This is not what immigration enforcement should look like. We need answers, and Congress must act with meaningful immigration reform that reduces unlawful border crossings, addresses the backlog of asylum cases, and creates a pathway to legal status. This incident took place in the Magnolia Park neighborhood, just a handful of miles from both House District 145 and the FIFA World Cup Fan Fest.”
