Toyota announced that it is investing an additional $3.6 billion in its San Antonio, Texas plant, doubling its size by 2030 and creating 2,000 more jobs.
The company reported the expansion on Monday, explaining that production of the Toyota Tacoma pickup trucks would be transitioning from its plant in Tijuana, Mexico to Toyota Texas over a four-year period.
President Donald Trump heralded the move as an example of the success of his tariffs.
“Toyota is moving out of Mexico into the United States and building one of the biggest truck and car plants ever built. That’s amazing. That’s what tariffs do if properly used,” Trump told reporters during his meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday.
He posted the same message to Truth Social: “Toyota is moving from Mexico to the United States (Texas!). A really big deal. Tariffs at work!”
Since 2003, the company said it has invested $8.3 billion, including this most recent jump, into its San Antonio plant, which assembled nearly 200,000 vehicles in 2025.
“Texas is where the world builds bigger, and Toyota shows it once more with a $3.6 billion expansion in San Antonio that doubles their factory footprint and creates 2,000 new jobs,” said Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R-Texas), per the company’s press release.
Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) described the move as reinforcing Texas’ dominance in innovation and investment.
“Texas leads the nation because we believe in free enterprise, low taxes, and fewer government barriers to job creators. Congratulations to Toyota on their $3.6 billion new investment in San Antonio,” Cruz posted to X on Monday.
The company affirmed its commitment to continuing its operations in North America, referencing the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which is facing a lengthy 10-year annual review process after the U.S. opted not to extend it at the beginning of the month.
“Toyota remains committed to its operations throughout the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, and encourages a quick resolution to USMCA to make the North American region globally competitive,” the company stated.
Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) President and CEO Ted Ogawa framed the expansion as an example of the company’s support for U.S. assembly.
“By expanding our San Antonio plant, we are deepening our commitment to American manufacturing, creating meaningful and sustainable jobs, while advancing our mission to deliver high-quality vehicles that meet the changing needs of customers today and into the future,” he said.
