Two Supreme Court justices are set to testify before Congress next week on the high court’s annual budget request, marking the first time since 2019 that members of the court have appeared before lawmakers to discuss the judiciary’s annual funding request.

Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Elena Kagan are set to appear on July 14^th before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government (FSGG), according to a Tuesday announcement from House Appropriations Chair Tom Cole (R-Okla.).

Cole added that the FSGG has jurisdiction over the annual spending bill that funds the Supreme Court.

Also on the same day, the justices will give testimony to members of the Senate Appropriations Committee which decides exactly how much federal money is allocated to government agencies, programs and the military each year.

The Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts is requesting $9.7 billion in discretionary funding for the federal judiciary for fiscal year 2027, along with $826.5 million in mandatory appropriations to support judicial salaries and retirement funds, according to The Hill.

The request includes an additional $14.6 million for the Supreme Court Police to support protective activities for the justices, their homes and their families.

Citing a nationwide surge in threats against the judiciary, the budget also requests $920.9 million from Congress to deploy front-line security officers at every federal courthouse across the country.

The announcement sparked a bipartisan push for more information regarding how the court plans to allocate the funds.

According to Politico, senior appropriators stated they will continue focusing on the court’s operations and expenses, rather than on cases currently pending before the justices.
