President Donald Trump believes Russian President Vladimir Putin is feeling immense pressure to end the war with Ukraine.
While speaking to reporters on Monday before departing for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit, Trump stated that he’s in talks with the leaders of both nations.
“He [President Putin] wants to end it, and Ukraine wants to end it,” the president stated. “We’re in talks, and we’ll see if we can get it ended. I think we are getting much closer than people realize.”
“I think he does feel pressure,” Trump continued. “He wants to end it, and Ukraine wants to end it, and we’re in talks, and we’ll see if we can get it ended. It’s a terrible thing… I think we’re getting much closer than people realize, and President Putin wants it to end—I will tell you that very strongly, good call—and President Zelensky actually wants it to end now. We’re going to be going to NATO and we’re going to be talking about it. I think we’re going to get it ended.”
His comments come only hours after at least 11 people were killed and dozens more were injured in Kyiv after Russia launched 68 missiles and 351 drones.
The assault followed a 90-minute phone call between Putin and Trump on Saturday. During their conversation, which the Kremin described as “businesslike and very constructive,” Trump offered to mediate a swift solution to the conflict.
“There are enormous prospects for mutually beneficial cooperation between our countries. To achieve this, Donald Trump emphasized, it would be necessary to end the Ukrainian conflict as soon as possible,” Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov told reporters.
Trump also held a separate call on Saturday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who phoned the president on the Fourth of July to wish America a happy 250th anniversary and discuss the ongoing frontline situation.
