A fire broke out on the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City during Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks display. Flames could be seen rapidly spreading on the bridge, sending a plume of smoke into the air before firefighters extinguished it.
No injuries were reported, according to officials.
Coincidentally, the fire broke out on the landmark bridge at the same time President Donald Trump was giving his July 4th speech at the National Mall, in which he commemorated the iconic structure. The president deemed the bridge as “one of the greatest architectural feats of all time,” while firefighters in NYC were fighting the blaze.
The NYC Fire Department (FDNY) reported that two fire engines were used to put out the fire on the bridge, which was closed to traffic during the fireworks show. The display had been moved up to an earlier time due to severe weather threats along the East Coast.
“We also have the first flag ever to fly over one of the greatest architectural feats of all time, a thing called the Brooklyn Bridge: One of the most beautiful bridges anywhere in the world – built a long time ago,” Trump said during his speech, which was delayed by summer thunderstorms.
A storm in Washington, D.C. caused the evacuation of the massive crowd gathered to listen to Trump’s speech and watch the record-breaking fireworks display in the nation’s capital. However, after the delay, the event was able to resume.
