America250 announced that “America’s Time Capsule” has been sealed and will be buried on July 4th, to be reopened in 250 years.

The capsule contains items and contributions from the three branches of government, all 50 states, Washington, D.C., five U.S. territories, and other partners and institutions, noted America250, the organization tasked by Congress to lead the celebration of 250 years of American independence.

“The items preserved within America’s Time Capsule include letters, artifacts, records, and objects selected to help tell the story of the United States at the Semiquincentennial,” the organization stated.

Among the myriad of items included in the 900-pound, stainless steel capsule are digital copies on a molecular data storage device of historical items, including Thomas Jefferson’s rough draft of the Declaration of Independence and handwritten lyrics by Francis Scott Key of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

The cylinder, which was sealed last week, will be buried at Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia, to await its reopening in the year 2276.
