U.S. Representative Barry Moore and attorney Everett Wess have won the Republican and Democrat nominations, respectively, after both parties had their primaries advance to runoff elections to fill a Senate seat representing Alabama.
According to the Associated Press, with 99% of votes counted, Moore received 173,400 votes, or 55.8%, defeating former Navy SEAL Jared Hudson, who had 44.2%. Likewise, Wess received 50,200, or 54.6%, beating criminal justice advocate Dakarai Larriett’s 45.4%.
Moore was endorsed by President Donald Trump in January in a Truth Social post in which Trump noted that Moore, “an America First Patriot,” was “the first elected official in the country” to endorse his presidential run in 2015.
“A very successful Businessman, Civic Leader, and Highly Respected State Legislator prior to becoming a distinguished Congressman, Barry has dedicated his life to serving his Community,” Trump wrote. He also added, “Barry Moore is a good friend, fighter, and WINNER, and has my Complete and Total Endorsement to be the next United States Senator from Alabama — BARRY WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!”
Moore hails from Coffee County, where he grew up on a farm. He attended Auburn University, where he enlisted in the Alabama National Guard and met his wife Heather Hopper Moore. The couple founded BMI, Inc., a waste removal and demolition company.
In 2010, Moore was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives, and in 2020, he was elected to the U.S. House. His campaign biography states that he only supports bills that pass his four-part test of faith, family, finance and freedom.
The GOP nominee has a zero-tolerance policy for illegal immigration, supports federal and local law enforcement, believes in the Second Amendment, promises to fund the Veterans Association (VA), supported the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2025 in January, and vows to stand with the president, especially in his staunch support for his One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
When his race was called, Moore posted to X, “I am so grateful to God for His grace, guidance, and blessings.”
On the Democrat side, Wess earned his Juris Doctor from the Birmingham School of Law and holds a Master of Business Administration from Alabama A&M University. Before practicing law, he worked in technology, engineering, and education, even supporting NASA mission operations, as well as military and national security systems.
He served as Managing Partner of The Wess Law Firm, P.C., since 2001, focusing on misdemeanors, felonies and capital offenses. He is admitted to practice in all Alabama state courts, all federal district courts in Alabama, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.
Wess promises to advocate for voting rights, equal justice, affordable healthcare, quality public education and economic opportunity.
