Vice President JD Vance said he would discuss a 2028 presidential bid with his wife, Second Lady Usha Vance, after the 2026 midterms in November.
During an interview with CBS on Sunday, Vance, 41, was asked about his political future while speaking about his new memoir, “Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith.”
“Usha and I will absolutely sit down and talk about what comes next for our family,” said the vice president, noting that this would be after this year’s midterms. “People sort of assume that I’m sitting around, figuring out, whether I’m gonna run for president … The way that I make decisions is that I try not to make them until I absolutely must … I have no doubt that the president of the United States is going to be very supportive of anything that I ultimately decide to do … I never bring it up. But sure, the president brings it up a lot, sometimes publicly, sometimes privately. You know, the president’s a political animal. He loves this stuff. He’s very fascinated by it.”
After being questioned further about Trump’s vision for the GOP, Vance emphasized that the 47th president is always thinking ahead.
“It’s just … he kind of talks about it, like, ‘what’s gonna happen,’ you know? ‘How do we make sure that we’re successful? What does that mean for the future?’ It’s more of a conversation like that,” Vance clarified.
President Trump has previously mused over the idea of a future ticket that would feature both Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, floating a scenario where one could potentially run as the other’s running mate.
A May 2026 national poll from Emerson College indicates that if both men decide to launch their own White House bids, the race starts on remarkably even footing, with Vance holding a one percentage point lead over Rubio among prospective Republican voters.
However, an immediate campaign is far from certain for the vice president. The Washington Post reported that a person close to Vance noted his impending decision will be heavily influenced by his personal life, specifically the upcoming birth of his fourth child, a baby boy due in late July.
