“Total Eclipse of the Heart” singer Bonnie Taylor, whose real name is Gaynor Sullivan, has reportedly woken up from her medically induced coma. However, she remains “very unwell,” according to her spokesperson.
On Monday, Tyler’s team announced on the singer’s official website that she remains in an intensive care unit in Faro, Portugal, after doctors placed her in a coma to aid her recovery following emergency intestinal surgery in May.
“Bonnie is no longer in a coma but remains very unwell and in intensive care in hospital in Portugal. Although her condition is improving it is a slow process. Her doctors remain confident that she will make a good recovery but it is going to take time,” the statement said.
The spokesperson expressed gratitude for the “huge outpouring of love and support” from fans around the world, saying Tyler was aware of the messages and appreciative of the kind wishes.
“Bonnie’s family continue to ask for privacy and promise that we will issue further updates as soon as there are significant developments to share,” the statement concluded.
The team also stated that any upcoming shows will be canceled, but they remain hopeful that the shows set for the fall will still take place.
In May, Tyler’s website announced that she was rushed to the hospital in Portugal for emergency intestinal surgery, after she suffered a cardiac arrest.
Tyler, born Gaynor Hopkins, rose to success in 1976 with the release of her hit song, “Lost In France.” The singer later became a world-wide superstar following hits like “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero.”
