Kentucky GOP Senator Mitch McConnell was admitted into the hospital and is receiving medical care, according to his spokesperson David Popp.

“Senator McConnell was admitted to the hospital this morning. He is receiving excellent care,” Popp said in a statement on Sunday.

Popp however, did not include the reason behind McConnell’s (R-Ky.) hospitalization or his current condition.

Two of McConnell’s neighbors alleged that they saw the senator being placed on a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance outside his Washington, D.C., home around 9 a.m. ET, though the hospital to which he was taken was not disclosed.

McConnell has faced a series of public health challenges in recent years, including episodes in 2023 when he appeared to freeze while speaking to reporters. In February, he was hospitalized for eight days after experiencing flu-like symptoms. The GOP senator had also suffered two falls earlier that year, according to CNN.

McConnell first became a senator in 1985 and the body’s majority leader in 2015. In that position, he assisted with shaping President Donald Trump’s first presidential term, playing a key role in helping secure the confirmation of hundreds of federal judges.

Although McConnell will remain in the Senate until his term ends in early 2027, he officially concluded his historic run as Senate GOP Leader at the start of 2025.
