Organizers and fans are gearing up for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Freedom 250 main event today on the White House South Lawn in honor of America’s 250th birthday.
The weekend has featured attractions and festivities in the lead up to the Main Card fights scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m. ET Sunday.
In addition to the fighting events, June 14th also marks Flag Day and President Donald Trump’s birthday. The date is also significant as the 251st anniversary of the U.S. Army, which began as the Continental Army more than a year before American independence was declared.
The UFC highlighted the significance of the occasion on a social media post Sunday.
“Truly once in a lifetime. It’s FINALLY #UFCWhiteHouse Fight Day!” the organization posted on X.
The White House also celebrated the event on social media.
“WAKE UP! IT’S FIGHT NIGHT,” the White House wrote, later posting an hour long video of a repeating clip of President Donald Trump saying, “Fight, fight, fight.”
“FIGHT. FIGHT. FIGHT,” the White House said. “One hour of ‘fight, fight, fight’ energy. It’s UFC Freedom 250 day.”
Freedom 250, which is organizing a myriad of events in celebration of 250 years of American independence, compared today’s fights to the beginnings of the country.
“The original heavyweight title fight,” the organization posted to social media, with renderings of the first American president, George Washington, and the British monarch, King George III.
“THE FIGHT FOR FREEDOM. JULY 4, 1776,” the post read.
The Main Card event, featuring seven fights, is taking place on the White House South Lawn in the octagon fighting ring underneath the UFC “Claw” specially set up for the occasion.
However, the Weather Channel noted a problematic forecast.
“UFC Freedom 250 is facing a chaotic weather setup on the White House South Lawn, with a 60% chance of thunderstorms, heavy downpours, and wind gusts up to 34 mph threatening to delay the outdoor fights,” the channel posted to social media, further referencing high humidity, the head index and the presence of mosquitos and gnats.
“While the venue’s massive 92-foot overhang will keep the octagon dry, a single lightning strike within eight miles will trigger an automatic 30-minute freeze on the entire event,” it went on.
Despite the forecast, the event continues to be touted by many organizations and government entities, including the Department of War.
“UFC Freedom 250 celebrates the fighting spirit that lives in every American warrior standing watch around the world,” the department posted.
Saturday festivities included performances by Zac Brown Band. He can be heard playing Lee Greenwood’s iconic song, “God Bless the U.S.A.” in a video posted by Freedom 250.
He will also be performing the national anthem alongside the U.S. Marine Band on Sunday.
