President Donald Trump has confirmed that a finalized peace deal with Iran is imminent after Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed optimism about an agreement.
Trump posted to Truth Social on Saturday that the agreement with Iran is to be electronically signed on Sunday.
He began his post by blasting a previous deal Iran inked with former President Barack Obama and contrasting it with his own pending agreement.
“Barack Hussein Obama’s Deal with Iran, the JCPOA, was an easy, beautiful, smooth road to a Nuclear Weapon, which Iran would have had six years ago, and would have used long before now,” Trump said. “My Agreement with Iran is the exact opposite, A WALL TO NO NUCLEAR WEAPON!”
One of the Trump administration’s top objectives in its military campaign against the Islamic regime was to prevent Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Operation Epic Fury came after months of failed talks in which Iran claimed its enriched uranium, which far surpassed the level needed for civilian uses, was not for a weapon.
Another goal that emerged in the conflict was to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the globe’s oil imports are shipped out of the Gulf region.
“In fact, they no longer want a Nuclear Weapon, nor will they have one, either through purchase, development, or any other form of procurement. The Deal is scheduled to get signed tomorrow, and immediately after it is signed, the Hormuz Strait is OPEN TO ALL,” the president declared.
“Our relationship with Iran is a much different and better one than previous Administrations have had,” he continued. “Unlike Obama’s Hundreds of Billions of Dollars in payments to them, including 1.7 Billion Dollars in green, cold cash, no money will exchange hands.”
Iran was awarded $1.7 billion in cash through a settlement with the U.S. in 2015. In 2016, then- Secretary of State John Kerry said, “I think that some of it will end up to the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) or of other entities, some of which are labeled terrorists… You can’t prevent that.”
In the years after the settlement, Iran continued, as it has done since the 1980s and 1990s, to fund Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis as these militant groups’ primary state sponsor. It increased its paramilitary budgets until the Trump administration reimposed sanctions in 2018, heavily choking back its funding of Hezbollah and Hamas.
“At the appropriate time, when all is calm, we will go in and get the Nuclear Dust, buried deep under the powerful sunken granite mountains, thanks to our beautiful B-2 Bombers and their brilliant pilots, and downblend and destroy it, whether in Iran, or the United States,” Trump went on, referring to Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile.
“We look forward to working with Iran, and the entire Middle East, long into the future. Hopefully, this process will all work out quickly, easily, and smoothly. If it doesn’t, we have the ultimate alternative, hopefully never to be used again!” the president concluded.
Trump already has a packed schedule on Sunday, as it marks Flag Day, the UFC America 250 event at the White House and his 80th birthday.
