President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Palace of Versailles following Monday’s G7 summit in the French lakeside town of Evian-les-Bains.
Next Wednesday’s dinner, following Trump’s series of bilateral meetings, working sessions and discussions with allied leaders, will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States’ independence, lauded by officials as “a historic symbol of Franco-American friendship.”
The residence of French kings from Louis XIV to Louis XVI, Versailles regularly hosts leaders and foreign dignitaries, including British King Charles III and Queen Camilla in the Hall of Mirrors, one of the 2,300 rooms in the palace.
Shortly after his election in 2017, Macron also hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin at the estate before their diplomatic relationship deteriorated.
At the G7 summit, the leaders of Canada, Germany, Italy and Japan will meet with Trump to discuss artificial intelligence, illegal migration, supply chain resilience and economic growth while aiming to strengthen critical mineral supply chains for advanced technologies.
Trump will also meet separately with the leaders from Egypt, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as he works toward a deal with Iran for an end to the Middle Eastern conflict.
According to one official who spoke to the Associated Press, Trump is expected to discuss plans to demine the Strait of Hormuz with U.S. allies as confidence for a deal increases.
The war in Ukraine will be a prominent topic of discussion, as well, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to attend the summit.
Although it has not been confirmed whether the two leaders will meet formally, there is a strong chance they could meet on the sidelines of the event.
The president is scheduled to travel to France early Monday following the UFC Freedom 250 event at the White House on Sunday evening.
