UPDATE: 11:32 AM: Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed that “no hazard exists” at the building despite reports of a “hazardous materials incident.”
“Earlier this morning, Pentagon occupants were notified of a potential air quality issue, prompting immediate precautionary safety measures and evaluation,” Parnell posted to X on Thursday.
“Subsequent testing confirmed no hazard exists, and normal operations have resumed,” he stated.
On Thursday morning, Arlington Fire and EMS confirmed that its Hazardous Materials Team was operating at the Pentagon, supporting the Pentagon Force Protection Agency’s (PFPA) Hazmat Team due to a “hazardous materials incident.”
CNN had reported, citing three sources and the fire department, that multiple floors of the building were locked down, with others evacuated because of the situation. The outlet also reported that a malfunctioning sensor system had detected the possible presence of anthrax, according to sources and first responder radio traffic.
“We express our sincere appreciation to the first responders for their swift actions to ensure the safety of all personnel,” Parnell continued.
8:33 AM: Multiple floors of the Pentagon are on lockdown, while others are being evacuated in response to a “hazardous materials incident,” according to reporting by CNN.
The outlet cited three sources claimed to be familiar with the situation as well as the local fire department.
Arlington Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in a Thursday morning social media post said the Hazardous Materials Team is currently operating at the building, supporting the Pentagon Force Protection Agency’s (PFPA) Hazmat Team “during a hazardous materials incident.”
Sean Parnell, Pentagon spokesperson, confirmed on Thursday that systems “have detected an air quality issue necessitating precautionary measures until we determine its significance,” CNN reported.
“The Department is executing standard protection protocols, including a shelter-in-place order for the affected area,” Parnell reportedly said. “Response teams are in place and ready to support building occupants.”
Captain Jamie Jill, spokesperson for the Arlington County Fire Department, said the PFPA’s hazardous materials response team is responding to the situation with support from the fire department, per the outlet.
Two of the sources referenced by CNN said floors two through five in corridors four through seven of the Pentagon complex have been locked down, with the third source telling the outlet that police are wearing gas masks and full chemical protective gear in the building.
