United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that two Hellfire missiles were fired into the engine room of a Guinea-Bissau-flagged ship attempting to run the U.S. blockade on Iranian ports.
At 11:20 p.m. ET on Wednesday, U.S. forces disabled the vessel M/T Jalveer in the Gulf of Oman. According to CENTCOM, this is the third commercial vessel immobilized this week and the ninth since the blockade began on April 13th.
“A U.S. aircraft fired two Hellfire missiles into the ship’s engine room after the crew repeatedly failed to comply with directions from U.S. forces,” the command said in a Thursday statement.
This ship was purportedly trying to transport Iranian oil through the Gulf of Oman, despite the U.S. naval blockade that has been in place since April.
Earlier in the week, U.S. aircraft also disabled two other Palau-flagged tankers: the M/T Marivex on Monday and the M/T Settebello on Tuesday. According to CENTCOM, the Marivex was intercepted while attempting to sail into an Iranian port, while the Settebello was targeted for trying to transport Iranian oil.
“The blockade is being enforced impartially against vessels of all nations entering or departing Iranian ports and coastal areas, including all Iranian ports on the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman,” the command noted.
Since the onset of the blockade, which was implemented following a ceasefire announcement between the United States and Iran, CENTCOM forces have disabled nine vessels that were non-compliant, as well as redirected 135 compliant ships. It also stated that 42 vessels providing humanitarian aid were allowed to pass.
