Republican Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has taken a significant step toward a second term in office after winning the state’s GOP gubernatorial primary in a landslide, defeating six challengers.
The Associated Press confirmed on Tuesday, with 87% of votes counted, that the incumbent won with 155,114 votes, or 90.9%.
Real estate agent Irina Hansen gained 2.3% of the vote, businessman Matthew Winterhawk had 1.7%, Founder & CEO, BlkEdgeAi Donald Beaudry Jr. received 1.3%, non-profit founder M. Kameron Hawkins and businessman Jose Zelaya each gained 0.6%, and entrepreneur Barak Zilberberg received 0.4%. 2.3% of Republican voters chose none of the candidates on the ballot.
Nevada has a lifetime term limit of two four-year terms, meaning Lombardo is running for his final term as governor.
Born in Japan to a military family, Lombardo traveled the world before settling in Las Vegas. He served in both the U.S. Army and the Nevada National Guard before joining the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), where he served for 26 years before being elected Sheriff of Clark County in 2014. He became Nevada’s 31st governor in 2023.
His executive orders have focused on Nevada’s workforce, including a regulatory freeze signed in the early days of his tenure, which recommended that obsolete or onerous state executive branch agency regulations be removed. He also phased out remote work in his first week in office, following the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Nevada Attorney General Aaron D. Ford won the Democrat nomination with 63.8% of the vote.
Washoe County Commissioner Alexis Hill gained 23% of the Democrat vote, while businessman James Cooper had 3.7% and medical worker Sunshine Arterburn had 2.7% of the vote. 4.2% of Democrat voters chose none of the candidates on the ballot.
Ford, 54, is endorsed by Reproductive Freedom for All and two separate Planned Parenthood groups. His campaign website lists housing, healthcare, energy and education as his top issues. He is also the first Black attorney general in the state’s history
