UPDATE 10:31 AM – President Donald Trump has confirmed that Iran downed a U.S. Army AH-64 Apache helicopter and warned that the United States must respond out of “necessity.”
“Our Great Military has just informed me that last night the Iranians shot down one of our highly sophisticated Apache Helicopters while patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Tuesday. “There were two pilots involved, both are safe and uninjured. Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack.”
The attack calls into question the status of the ceasefire agreement between the U.S. and Iran. President Trump and his top officials have attempted to reach a peace agreement through diplomatic talks for several weeks. However, the Trump administration has maintained that U.S. forces are prepared to begin military actions in the Middle East again if necessary.
6:13 AM – The crew of a United States Army AH-64 Apache helicopter was safely rescued after the aircraft went down near the coast of Oman, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced.
The two crew members were rescued by American forces at 7:33 p.m. ET on Monday, within about two hours of the crash, CENTCOM said in a Tuesday morning statement.
President Donald Trump confirmed to reporters hours after the incident that the crew was safe.
“The pilots are fine,” the commander-in-chief said. “Nobody injured.”
CENTCOM stated that the cause of the crash, which occurred while the crew was patrolling regional waters, is under investigation.
According to a May 13th report from the Congressional Research Service, 42 aircraft had been lost or damaged since the onset of hostilities with Iran on February 28th, though subsequent events would impact this number. The report showed that the majority of losses were unmanned drones.
A number of manned aircraft have also been destroyed, including a fighter jet that was shot down over Iran, leading to extensive, and now-famous, rescue operations for the pilots.
