Texas has officially surpassed California for having the most Fortune 500 companies headquartered in their state.
The 2026 Fortune 500 company list, based off fiscal revenue date from 2025, showed the Lone Star State leading with 57 companies, per PR Newswire, which provided the findings.
California came in close second with 56, and New York followed with 53 companies.
Out of the top 10 companies on the list, both Texas and California each boasted two.
Fortune 500 companies represent a tremendous amount of the United States gross domestic product (GDP) with $21 trillion in revenues and employing over 30 million people globally.
The data also showed Texas leading in terms of combined revenue of the companies at $2.8 trillion. However, California was ahead according to other metrics, including profitability and value, as well as the companies employing the most people out of any state at 2.8 million.
Texas was the only state to have two cities make the top five on the list with Houston and Dallas, though New York City maintains an incredible supremacy:
- New York City at 43
- Houston at 25
- Chicago at 14
- Atlanta at 13
- Dallas at 11

People and businesses are choosing Texas because Texas works.”
