Karmelo Anthony has been charged with first degree murder after fatally stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas.
In the closely watched murder trial, 12 jurors delivered a verdict on Tuesday after hearing four days of testimony, evidence and closing arguments. Anthony, who was 17-years-old at the time, now 19-years-old, previously admitted that he stabbed Metcalf at the meet. However, he and his defense team had argued that he acted in self-defense.
The Tuesday morning proceedings were highly efficient, as the jury deliberated for roughly three hours. The jury focused on determining whether Anthony intentionally or knowingly caused Metcalf’s death and if the evidence supported a lesser charge of manslaughter.
Anthony’s prison sentence remains undetermined as the trial has moved into the punishment phase — where he faces “5 to 99 years, or life in prison.”
The incident occurred during a track meet at Memorial High School on April 2, 2025, attended by students from several other high schools. According to witness testimony, Anthony, a student from a rival school, entered a tent occupied by Metcalf’s school where Metcalf and others asked him to leave. However, Anthony remained there and even verbally tempted Metcalf to come and physically remove him himself.
Prosecutors argued that Anthony had provoked the incident, escalating the verbal disagreement into a fatal encounter after pulling a knife from his backpack and stabbing Metcalf directly in the chest.
Several student witnesses also testified that Anthony was behaving extremely aggressively, noting he appeared to be “looking for a fight.”
In court, Anthony’s defense had attempted to argue that their client acted in self-defense, claiming that he stabbed Metcalf because he “feared for his own safety.” The testimony also revealed that Anthony told a responding officer after the incident, “I’m not alleged, I did it. He put his hands on me. I told him not to.”
Notably, the jury remained sequestered throughout the murder trial due to the highly sensitive nature of the case.
