Israel and Iran are seeking “an immediate CEASEFIRE” after sharing strikes overnight, President Donald Trump announced.
On Sunday, Iran launched missiles toward Israel, purportedly the Islamic Republic’s first such attack on the country since the start of an early April ceasefire. Israel carried out retaliatory strikes as the two sides continued hostilities overnight.
“Both sides, Israel and Iran, are looking to do an immediate CEASEFIRE! Final negotiations on ‘Peace’ are proceeding, subject to ignorance or stupidity getting in its way,” Trump posted on Truth Social Monday morning.
He added that the blockade would “remain in place, and in full force and effect, until a ‘Final Deal’ is reached,” claiming, “Things should move quickly.”
Shortly before, Trump had also posted urging an end to the hostilities.
“Israel and Iran must immediately stop ‘shooting,’” he said.
Per media reports, Iran’s military announced it was halting offensive strikes.
“Following the aggressions and evils of the brutal Zionist regime in South Lebanon and the Dahiya region, which took place with the support of the criminal America, the powerful armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran gave a painful response to this regime in order to support the oppressed people of Lebanon,” Iran’s military said in a statement, according to Fox News.
“On this basis, the cessation of armed forces operations is announced; But it is emphasized that if the aggressions and evils continue, including in the south of Lebanon, much more severe and crushing measures will be on the way,” it continued.
Iran’s weekend strikes followed an Israeli attack on Lebanon. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said a Hezbollah command center in southern Beirut was struck after northern Israeli communities had sustained rocket attacks launched by the terrorist organization.
Speaking with Fox News Chief Foreign Correspondent Trey Yingst on Sunday, Trump said the Iranian attacks would not help with negotiations.
“You’ve shot your missiles, that’s enough. Get back to the table and make a deal,” Trump said about Iran.
The president also told Yingst that Israel’s attack on Beirut was not coordinated with the United States, saying, “I’m not happy about it.”
Trump reportedly called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after the attacks by Iran, telling Axios beforehand that he would urge him not to retaliate.
Following the onslaught of Iranian missile barrages and the Israeli response, the IDF claimed several targets across the Islamic Republic were struck, including sites at the petrochemical complex in Mahshahr in southwestern Iran.
“These facilities were used by the armed forces of the Iranian terror regime to produce and export raw materials for weapons production,” the IDF posted on X Monday. “The targeted infrastructure produced unique materials that serve as critical components for the development of ballistic missiles.”
The IDF also claimed it carried out “a large-scale strike on strategic defense systems belonging to the terror regime.”
In response to the hostilities, the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem announced that it and the Tel Aviv branch office would be closed on both Monday and Tuesday, and it directed all U.S. government employees to shelter in place.
The embassy also reported that the Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv was operating, though airlines should be contacted directly for flight options.
