State Senator Scott Wiener (D-Calif.) emerged as the definitive frontrunner in the primary for California’s 11th Congressional District, capturing the top spot in the race to replace retiring Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).
Wiener captured 43.4% of the vote Tuesday night in a crowded field of eight Democrats, two Republicans and one “no party preference” candidate. Progressive City Supervisor Connie Chan followed in second at 28.5%, while tech millionaire Saikat Chakrabarti trailed in third with 14.9%, subsequently conceding defeat.
“The people of San Francisco sent a very clear message. San Franciscans are ready for bold forward looking leadership, for real results, and a new generation of leaders that isn’t afraid to take on the toughest fights facing our country,” Wiener told supporters at an election night party in the Castro neighborhood.
“Tonight is an important milestone. But this campaign is not over. We have five more months. We’re going to continue building a broad coalition across every neighborhood, every generation, every background, and every community in San Francisco,” he added.
Under California’s top-two primary system, Wiener and Chan will advance to the November general election to succeed Pelosi in what has become one of San Francisco’s most closely watched Democrat contests. Pelosi announced her retirement from Congress last fall, capping off a nearly 40-year tenure.
“At a time when fundamental freedoms and democratic values are under assault, we need a leader in Congress who is prepared to fight — forcefully and effectively,” said Pelosi in May when she endorsed Chan.
Wiener has represented San Francisco and northern San Mateo County in the state Senate since 2016 and previously served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. During his tenure, he has authored a slew of controversial far-left legislation into law. Wiener entered the primary with the official endorsement of the California Democrat Party.
The upcoming November face-off will pit Wiener’s base against Chan, whose path to victory depends on consolidating progressive voters and expanding beyond her traditional political strongholds.
