United States Central Command (CENTCOM) refuted claims from Iranian state television that Iranian forces successfully downed a U.S. aircraft.
Taking to X on Thursday, CENTCOM wrote, “CLAIM: Iran’s state TV claimed Iranian forces downed a U.S. aircraft near Bushehr. FALSE.”
It continued, “TRUTH: No U.S. aircraft were shot down. All U.S. air assets are accounted for.”
Iran’s state-run TV said that an American aircraft was destroyed in its Jam governorate in Bushehr, Reuters reported on Thursday, citing Jam Governor Masoud Tangestani.
Tasnim News Agency, an organization closely linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), reported on Thursday night that explosions were heard near the Strait of Hormuz and Bandar Abbas. The outlet later amended that the sounds came from exchanged fire made in warning to ships in the Strait.
The report comes amid an ongoing delicate ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran as both parties work to negotiate a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to de-escalate the months-long conflict.
The most recent draft of the memo, according to Axios on Thursday, would in part extend a ceasefire, allow unrestricted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and start negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program. However, it is said that President Donald Trump has not yet given his approval.
