The congressional career of veteran anti-Trump firebrand Al Green is officially coming to an end.
In a dramatic Democrat runoff primary, forced by Texas’ redistricting maps, 78-year-old Green was knocked out by 38-year-old Representative Christian Menefee. Green’s defeat closes the chapter on one of the House’s most vocal progressive partisans, who spent years using his platform to target the “America First” agenda.
On Tuesday, Green (D-Texas) was decisively defeated by Menefee (D-Calif.). According to the Associated Press, with 98% of votes counted, Menefee secured 69.4% of the vote, while Green only received 30.6%.
Prior to this election in the deep-blue Houston-based 18th District, Green represented the neighboring 9th District.
Due to recent mid-decade redistricting in the Lone Star State, his traditional boundaries were redrawn by the Republican-led Legislature to be significantly more competitive for the GOP, prompting Green to shift his campaign over to the newly-mapped 18th district.
Following Green’s blowout loss, President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to celebrate the results.

The 47th president and Green share a bitter, media-frenzied history. During recent speeches made by Trump in the lower chamber, the now-former representative frequently staged loud, unruly protests on the House floor, raising his cane and shouting at the president.
During the 2025 address, the Democrat was also forcibly escorted out of the chamber by the Sergeant at Arms and censured by the House.
Additionally, Green was escorted off the House floor once more during Trump’s 2026 State of the Union (SOTU) address — after he violated decorum rules by holding up a large protest sign.
