An Army veteran widely known throughout his Escondido community as the proud owner of a prominent, flag-draped “Trump House” has died from the catastrophic injuries he sustained in a brutal daylight attack last week.
Kerry Sheron, 69, reportedly passed away at Palomar Hospital on Sunday evening, four days after being badly beaten outside his residence. Sheron had been fighting for his life in the intensive care unit of a local trauma center, where he was listed in critical condition with severe head trauma.
A family friend confirmed his passing, marking a tragic turn in an incident that has shaken the local community and drawn national attention.
According to the Escondido Police Department, the unprovoked assault took place at approximately 2:14 p.m. local time on Wednesday. At the time, Sheron had been working on his pickup truck in the driveway of his home, located near East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street, when the attacker launched the violent onslaught.
A bystander who heroically intervened to stop the beating was also injured during the encounter. Following the assault, the suspect fled the scene on foot before emergency responders arrived. Law enforcement officers quickly flooded the area and apprehended 32-year-old Thomas Caleb Butler, a Navy veteran who lived just blocks away.
Butler was arrested without incident and booked into the Vista Detention Facility on charges of attempted first-degree murder, which prosecutors are now expected to upgrade to murder following Sheron’s death.
The Sheron residence has long been a striking local landmark, heavily adorned with a patriotic display of American flags, pro-Trump banners, and GOP political signage. Neighbors noted that Sheron and his wife, Maria Garcia, were a fixture of the neighborhood, frequently standing outside in the mornings to wave flags and encourage passing drivers to honk in support.
While the nature of the home has previously made it a target for left-wing vandalism, friends of the suspect have publicly alleged that Butler actually “liked” the iconic home, but that he suffers from severe PTSD, paranoia, and deteriorating mental health stemming from his military service.
While his wife has publicly expressed that the attack was fueled by political hatred toward their pro-Trump displays, the Escondido Police Department stated that while detectives are still thoroughly evaluating all potential motives — including whether the incident had a political component — they have not yet found “definitive evidence” to support a politically motivated hate crime.
Meanwhile, the tragedy has prompted a wider community response, with Representative Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) calling for a swift and thorough investigation into the full circumstances of the attack.
In the days following the assault, the surrounding neighborhood has largely condemned the violence, gathering to hold vigils outside the “Trump House” to honor a man neighbors remembered as peaceful, outgoing, and deeply dedicated to his community.
