One America News White House and Chief Pentagon Correspondent Alexandra Ingersoll who was on air during the shooting by the White House gave her account of the event.
At just after 6 p.m. ET on Saturday, shots rang out near to where Ingersoll was giving a live broadcast on the White House grounds.
“All of a sudden we started to hear loud gunshots. And you might see on the playback video of myself in the middle of that live hit, I quickly ducked…off camera and I guess the studio lost connection,” she said.
The shots came from the United States Secret Service (USSS) checkpoint at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, which Ingersoll noted was an entryway used daily by both members of the media and the public.
“It’s not surprising that he didn’t make it beyond that access point,” she said, describing a strong presence of Secret Service agents.
“But it’s certainly concerning that someone would be motivated to open fire there,” she continued.
The gunman, who the Secret Service confirmed was deceased, was identified as 21-year-old Nasire Best.
On Saturday evening, the suspect reportedly opened fire at the checkpoint, prompting return fire by agents. Both the gunman and a bystander were struck, the Secret Service reported. It was not confirmed whether the bystander, whose condition was not provided, was shot by the suspect or by agents during the incident.
During a live broadcast on the North Lawn of the White House complex, close to the location of the shooting, Ingersoll was seen ducking and taking cover as shots rang out.
“Oh my gosh, we just heard gunshots,” she can be heard saying.
Secret Service agents ran down the driveway and told them to take shelter in the press briefing room at the White House, where they stayed for about 45 minutes, Ingersoll said.
Following the shooting, President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to thank the Secret Service and law enforcement for their actions.
In his late-night post, he highlighted that it had been about a month since the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton hotel. The president reiterated the importance of “what will be, the most safe and secure space of its kind ever built in Washington D.C.,” apparently referencing the planned new White House ballroom.
“The National Security of our Country demands it!” Trump stated.
