United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio attended both a dedication ceremony for the new U.S. Embassy Support Annex Building and a Roosevelt House reception with U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor in New Delhi, India, as part of his multi-day diplomatic trip.
The secretary of state’s itinerary in India also included a tour of Mother House, a visit to a children’s home and a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Ambassador Gor welcomed the secretary of state and highlighted the success of the earlier meeting with Modi.
“Well, I just want to welcome our great Secretary of State again to India. We had a phenomenal meeting today with the prime minister. It’s a relationship we deeply care about. It’s a relationship that is growing. Literally today, the Secretary opened a brand new building right here. So that is a partnership that we are continuing to grow. We have our Quad meeting. Since I have arrived here a few months ago, we had settled our trade deal. India has joined Pax Silica. Investment is at record levels, and this partnership will continue to grow. And today, the Secretary extended an invite to Prime Minister Modi to come visit the White House on behalf of the President, so we have some great things ahead,” said Ambassador Gor.
Gor referred in his remarks to a strategic partnership between the U.S., India, Japan and Australia. Though not a formal military alliance like NATO, it is a diplomatic and strategic partnership focused on cooperation in areas such as maritime security, cybersecurity, infrastructure and emerging technology.
“Yeah, it’s an honor and it’s great to be here, to see this facility and the embassy, and to open a new building — that’s really going to make us more efficient in terms of the work we do here — and obviously to thank our locally employed staff here as well, which are excellent. And we had a very productive meeting today. We’ll have very productive meetings in this visit,” responded Rubio.
Rubio had met with Modi to discuss regional security, the Iran conflict, and the potential for the U.S. to boost energy exports to India.
The secretary of state also emphasized the strong bilateral relationship between the two nations, noting that the U.S. approaches the Indo-Pacific region with India serving as a cornerstone of its strategy.
“So it’s a great relationship already. It really is. We have — we do so much together and there’s so much more to do,” concluded Rubio.
