The Pentagon released declassified files on Friday, including audio of the Apollo 12 crew’s description of the mysterious “streaks of light” they saw while trying to sleep in deep space.
Audio from a 1969 post-mission medical debrief captures Apollo 12 astronauts Pete Conrad, Richard Gordon and Alan Bean reporting the unexplained streaks upon their return.
“The streaks I saw were one that I saw on the horizontal. The horizontal streaks were always a little bit above the center,” said one crew member, according to the transcript.
The 1969 audio is part of the Department of War’s second batch of records under its Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters (PURSUE). The first batch, made public on May 8th, contained mysterious footage of an “eight-pointed star” across the sky and reports from Apollo 17’s crew of an strange bright sparks in space resembling Fourth of July fireworks.
The latest release includes 222 documents, photos, and over 50 previously classified videos linked to unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), many featuring military aircraft tracking unexplained objects.
The drop also highlights historical archives. During his 1962 Aurora 7 mission as he orbited Earth, Astronaut Scott Carpenter reported seeing white particles.
“They appear to be traveling exactly my speed. It’s going faster than I am, as a matter of fact. Their motion is random. They definitely look like snowflakes this time,” said Carpenter, describing the phenomenon.
The Department of War stated that the rolling release is part of a government-wide effort to identify, declassify, and publicly release UAP-related records and historical documents.
“The Department of War is in lockstep with President Trump to bring unprecedented transparency regarding our government’s understanding of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena. These files, hidden behind classifications, have long fueled justified speculation — and it’s time the American people see it for themselves. This release of declassified documents demonstrates the Trump Administration’s earnest commitment to unprecedented transparency,” said Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.
While filed under UAP records, scientists have long noted that the Apollo 12 flashes were likely caused by cosmic rays interacting with the astronauts’ retinas in deep space.
