Amid ongoing coordination with the government of Nigeria, U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) launched a second wave of successful precision strikes against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in Africa, neutralizing several militants.

According to a statement from AFRICOM, additional kinetic strikes carried out on Sunday eliminated several ISIS militants. Officials confirmed that the targets were ISIS fighters and reported no casualties among U.S. or Nigerian forces.

The operation represents a critical continuation of the joint security partnership between Washington and Abuja, following a raid just days prior that eliminated ISIS’s global second-in-command.

By sustaining kinetic operations in the region, the combined efforts of U.S. and Nigerian forces have dealt another severe blow to the terror group’s operational capabilities and leadership network across West Africa.

Meanwhile, the most recent strike comes after the takedown of Abu-Bilal al-Minuki — the Islamic State group’s global second-in-command — which was carried out in a separate, prior joint operation by U.S. and Nigerian forces on Saturday.

“The removal of these terrorists diminishes the group’s capacity to plan attacks that threaten the safety and security of the U.S. and our partners,” the AFRICOM statement read.

“AFRICOM remains committed to leveraging specialized U.S. capabilities in support of our partners to defeat shared security threats.”
