President Donald Trump has arrived in Beijing, China, for his summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, greeted by a red carpet.
On Wednesday, Air Force One landed at Beijing Capital International Airport at about 7:50 p.m., local time. The president and his entourage were greeted by Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, Ambassador of China to the United States Xie Feng, Executive Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Ma Zhaoxu and U.S. Envoy to Beijing David Perdue, according to the White House.
The welcome ceremony included roughly 300 Chinese youth, a military honor guard and military band.
“Welcome, welcome! Warm welcome!” children chanted in Chinese, waving small American and Chinese flags.
Joined by his son, Eric Trump, his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, War Secretary Pete Hegseth and several CEOs, the president greeted dignitaries and smiled at the crowd. He entered a limousine, which was part of a motorcade to his hotel, without taking questions.
The route leaving the airport was decorated with American and Chinese flags, Trump’s traveling press pool noted. Skyscrapers in the area were lit with Chinese characters that meant, “Beijing welcome.”
There are no other public engagements on the president’s official schedule for Wednesday. On Thursday, however, he is set to participate in a State Banquet at the Great Hall of the People, as well as a bilateral meeting over tea with the Chinese president. Trump is also expected to visit the Temple of Heaven, where Chinese emperors used to pray, according to the Associated Press. This marks Trump’s seventh face-to-face meeting with President Xi, and his second since he retook office last year.
Trump is joined by more than a dozen major business executives on this trip. In a Truth Social post overnight, however, he corrected his guest list.
“CNBC incorrectly reported that the Great Jensen Huang, of Nvidia, was not invited to the incredible gathering of the World’s Greatest Businessmen/women proudly going to China. In actuality, Jensen is currently on Air Force One and, unless I ask him to leave, which is highly unlikely, CNBC’s reporting is incorrect or, as they say in politics, FAKE NEWS!” Trump stated.
He added that it was “an honor” to have Huang, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Apple CEO Tim Cook, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, Blackstone CEO Stephen Schwarzman, Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg, Cargill CEO Brian Sikes, Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser, General Electric Aerospace CEO Larry Culp, Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon, Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon and several others “journeying to the great country of China.”
“I will be asking President Xi, a Leader of extraordinary distinction, to ‘open up’ China so that these brilliant people can work their magic, and help bring the People’s Republic to an even higher level!” he wrote. “In fact, I promise, that when we are together, which will be in a matter of hours, I will make that my very first request. I have never seen or heard of any idea that would be more beneficial to our incredible Countries!”
