Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has been released from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after being hospitalized for pneumonia over the weekend, though he remains in recovery at the hospital.

Giuliani’s representative, Ted Goodman, posted an update about his condition on X on Wednesday evening.

“Mayor Rudy Giuliani is out of the ICU and will spend some time recovering before leaving the hospital,” Goodman wrote. “The mayor and his family appreciate the outpouring of love and prayers sent his way.”

“Mayor Giuliani—the man who took down the Mafia, saved New York City, and ran toward the towers on September 11th—is the same fighter he’s always been, and he’s winning this fight,” he continued. “The power of prayer is working. The mayor feels it. We feel it. Please keep them coming for America’s Mayor, Rudy Giuliani.”

President Donald Trump announced that Giuliani, 81, was hospitalized in critical condition on Sunday afternoon in a Truth Social post.

Goodman explained that Giuliani’s affliction with pneumonia was complicated by his diagnosis with restrictive airway disease, a result of his exposure to toxins in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks in New York City, which killed almost 3,000 people.

Serving as mayor at the time, Giuliani made many trips to Ground Zero over the three months following the collapse of the Twin Towers.

America’s mayor was visited by a priest at his bedside on Tuesday. The priest reportedly performed the last rites, Catholic sacraments including prayer, anointing with oil and communion, which are given to those who are dying to prepare the soul for heaven.

On Monday, Giuliani’s spokesperson also noted that he was able to breathe on his own without mechanical ventilation.

Giuliani will remain in the hospital for further monitoring and treatment.
