President Donald Trump addressed rumors that his son, Donald Trump Jr., could be the potential new host of a reboot of “The Apprentice,” a once-top-rated reality show originally hosted by the president before he ran for office.
Discussions on the potential project are reportedly still in the early stages, and Amazon has not yet reached out to the Trump family for an official proposal. If it does move forward, however, the reboot could eventually stream on Amazon Prime Video.
The streaming service is reportedly considering Trump Organization Executive Vice President Donald Trump Jr. for the role. The eldest Trump son has served as a frequent stand-in “boardroom advisor” for Trump executives Carolyn Kepcher and George Ross.
“The Apprentice,” which originally premiered in 2004 and aired on NBC until 2017, followed aspiring business executives through a multi-week “job interview” for a position with the Trump Organization.
Trump, already a prominent New York real estate figure, gained significant national attention during his time on the show, popularizing the catchphrase “You’re fired!” before he left the production in 2015 to run for office.
The president told Fox News on Thursday that his son is a “good guy” and would “probably be good” as the host.
“He’s got a little charisma going. You need a little charisma for that sucker. So, we’ll see what happens,” Trump said, noting the “tremendous success” of the show’s 14 seasons.
Trump Jr. allegedly said this was the first time he heard his name was in the mix, and Amazon executives had not yet reached out to any Trump family members regarding the possibility, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The Wall Street Journal also alleged that Amazon had internally discussed the idea of casting Trump Jr. as a host for “The Apprentice’s” reboot if they did decide to launch the show.
Amazon said in a statement that a reboot was “not in active development”, but confirmed to Variety that “preliminary internal discussions about what’s next for ‘The Apprentice’” had begun since the media company acquired Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), and with it, “The Apprentice” franchise, in 2022.
“Any reporting on details of the show or names of potential hosts would be purely speculative,” Amazon said.
Amazon’s alleged interest in rebooting “The Apprentice” signals further efforts by the company to strengthen ties with the Trump family, following its release of Melania, a documentary about First Lady Melania Trump directed by Brett Ratner.
Amazon reportedly paid $40 million for the film’s rights — along with an additional unreleased docuseries — outbidding Disney by $26 million. The company also reportedly spent another $35 million on marketing, bringing its total investment to around $75 million.
Jeff Bezos, who retired as CEO of Amazon in 2021 but remains executive chairman, was asked last month whether the company’s involvement in the documentary was an attempt to gain favor with the Trump administration — a suggestion he denied, according to Status.
