Shifting military health policy, War Secretary Pete Hegseth announced on Tuesday that the U.S. Department of War will no longer require U.S. service members to receive the annual influenza vaccine.
The directive, which takes effect immediately, moves the flu shot from a mandatory requirement to a voluntary option for all active-duty troops, National Guard members, Reservists, and Department of War civilian personnel.
Hegseth characterized the previous universal mandate as “overly broad” and “not rational,” arguing that the policy change is a necessary step toward restoring medical autonomy and religious freedom within the joint force.
The decision was formalized through a memorandum signed on Monday, effectively ending a requirement that has been a staple of military medical readiness since the early 1950s.
While Hegseth emphasized that service members are still encouraged to receive the vaccine if they believe it is in their best interest, he stated that the government would no longer force the procedure, asserting that personal convictions and faith are “not negotiable.”
Under the new guidelines, individual branches of the military have a 15-day window to request specific exceptions if they believe a mandate remains necessary for certain high-risk operational environments, such as recruit training centers.
This policy reversal follows years of intensifying debate over military vaccination requirements, sparked largely by the contentious COVID-19 mRNA vaccine mandate implemented in 2021. That mandate led to the discharge of over 8,000 service members before it was rescinded by Congress in 2023.
The Trump administration has since prioritized the reinstatement of those individuals with back pay, and this latest move regarding the flu vaccine aligns with a broader executive effort to dismantle what the administration describes as “absurd, overreaching mandates” that detract from war-fighting capabilities.
Nonetheless, public health officials within the military have historically defended the flu mandate as a critical tool for maintaining force readiness, citing the “risk of rapid transmission” in close-quarters environments like ships and barracks.
