New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has met with President Donald Trump during a surprise visit to Washington, D.C.
On Thursday, Mamdani (D-N.Y.) shared a photo on X showing the two meeting in the Oval Office, calling it a “productive meeting” focused on housing in New York City.
The second in-person meeting for the two New Yorkers comes after the president mentioned Mamdani during his State of the Union address on Tuesday.
“The new communist mayor of New York City, I think he’s a nice guy, actually,” Trump said of the democrat socialist. “I speak to him a lot. Bad policy, but nice guy.”
Trump went on to reference Mamdani’s call to action, urging people to help shovel snow in New York City amid record snowfall. To become an Emergency Snow Shoveler, applicants must provide two original forms of ID and, if possible, a Social Security card, according to the NYC Department of Sanitation.
Trump criticized what he described as the stringent identification requirements for temporary snow shovelers under the current city leadership, pointing to what he called the irony of the program requiring multiple forms of ID for a short-term shoveling job, while opposing similar requirements for voting.
“If you apply for that job you need to show them two original forms of ID and a social security card yet they don’t want identification for the greatest privilege of all: voting in America,” Trump said.
